Arquitecto: Bertrand Goldberg
Estilo arquitectónico: Moderno
Tipo: Rascacielos
Altura: 179.23 metros
Presupuesto: Millones 36$
Uso: Mixto (Residencial, Comercial, Teatro,
Espacios de ocio y entretenimiento, Puerto deportivo)
Plantas: Torres 61, Edificio Comercial 16

On the ground distribution of the towers of Marina City, we can see how the great architect Bertrand Goldberg located radially different apartments, ranging in area occupying a terrace, a terrace and a half or two terraces and a half; It distributed all around the circular core services. The core of each tower is composed of a "structural concrete cinlindro" of just over 10 feet in diameter, which accommodates the vertical movement of the elevators, emergency stairs and facilities.

These two majestic residential towers reminiscent of the way to a "corncob", not only proclaimed as the highest in the world of its kind after being built, but, also holds the record for concrete structureshighest in thethe world ...

Multi-Family Complex in Marina City is located on the banks of the Chicago River in the heart of the city, close to the IBM Building designed by the prestigious architect Ludwig Mies Van der Rohe, also close to the recently opened Trump Chicago Tower, designed by SOM. The lot where he built the Marina City traverse the State Street to the east, Dearborn Street on the west and the Chicago River for its south side. With the construction of Marina City, Bertrand Golderg (1913-1997), very concerned about the society of his time and who he spent much of his career as an architect to design buildings for residential and institutional nature, wanted to create "a city within another city".

Marina City is composed of different buildings around a plaza. Two residential towers of 61 floors in total, 20 plants have private parking ramp, plus a further 40 floors for apartments, a 16-storey building for a shopping center with several restaurants, the theater building, which also has several cinemas, a bowling alley and a swimming pool, also an ice rink. The first residential tower to be built was the east tower and its construction ended in early 1962, the construction of the second tower, which stands at the foot of the Chicago River would be completed later that year under this tower, is located at the very foot of the Chicago River, they set different private docks to welcome the boats of the residents.

Smith & Wollensky

The highlight of this interesting piece of architecture are undoubtedly the two residential towers with their characteristic reinforced concrete structure topped with its majestic exterior of a curved terraces galloned offer great dynamism and immediately differentiate from other outbuildings. The two towers of Marina City is composed of a reinforced concrete structure divided into two parts, a bottom 20 floors of parking ramp, plus another upper body with 40 residential floors with 900 apartments for each, are joined by two separate bodies two plants in Goldberg also located a laundry service. A passable cover crown each tower for the use and enjoyment of the owners.

Marina City Seen From the River

The shape of the two residential towers of Marina City offer an almost sculptural, due to the geometry of the extension of concrete in the form of terraces, from which you can also live with the city of Chicago...

The two towers of Marina City got an important structural innovation, as they were the first buildings in the world to utilize the slipform. This innovative construction system that is now known worldwide as "climbing system" is based on the application of mechanical and hydraulic solutions that are achieved by raising the formwork go to the upper floors, and most important, need the help of a crane, a system of construction is very important for the construction of skyscrapers today, because working with cranes at the height of skyscrapers, offers a very high hazard. This system of construction is taking place today for the construction of many tall buildings and skyscrapers around the world such as the Turning Torso in Malmo, or the Burj Khalifa (Burj Dubai), among others.

Marina City

Bertrand Goldberg, who designed towers distinctive by its circular shape, also wanted the facades of both towers had large glass area for better utilization of the views of the city of Chicago covering 360 degrees around; also enabled large terraces below the super-structure of reinforced concrete. A very important fact of the structure of two towers, is that the first body designed to parking, to be open to the outside and therefore circulate air naturally by all its bulk, thus offering less resistance to strong wind so usual in the city of Chicago for much of the year.

Currently (2010), the use of some of the buildings that make up the Multi-Family Complex Marina City has changed, as for example the building that had once been an enormous 16-storey shopping center, now day has been converted into an office building, also in the space once occupied the ice rink and stood very near the Chicago River, has built a metal structure which has enabled several restaurants. Marina City has become a true example of functional architecture, a benchmark in the world of architecture in Chicago, the world of skyscrapers, and as a great example to follow by other architects around the world. Marina City became the masterpiece of renowned architect Bertrand Goldberg, who was without doubt the work that catapulted him to worldwide stardom.

Lake Point Tower, Chicago, Illinois, USA, 1965-1968

ESPAÑOL

Arquitectos: Schipporeit & Heinrich
Estilo arquitectura: Estilo Internacional
Tipo: Rascacielos
Altura: 196.60 metros
Plantas: 70
Uso: Residencial

Idea original de Mies para el rascacielos de Berlin con las tres alas formando 120º entre ellas / Original idea for the skyscraper Mies in Berlin with the three wings forming 120 ° between them

The Lake Point Tower is located at 505 North Lake Shore Drive, Chicago, Illinois, USA, and is the only residential building across Lake Shore Drive, a large and busy city avenue. The authors of this interesting building were two students of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, who was one of the greatest exponents of the Bauhaus school of design, art and architecture along with a small number of important architects as Le Corbusier and Philip Johnson laid the foundations of the famous International Style, the Bauhaus was founded by Walter Wropius in Weimar, Germany in 1919. The design of the Lake Point Tower in Chicago is inspired by a skyscraper that had designed the architect Mies van der Rohe for the city of Berlin in 1922.

The shape of the building plan consists of a Y asymmetric three identical wings leaving a 120 degree angle between them. For the design of the facade had originally planned 4 wings, but then found that the construction system using 3 was the most economical. Its high elevation and numerous to withstand winds that lash the city of Chicago for much of the year, the architects John Heinrich and George Schipporeit designed a triangular central core of reinforced concrete 59 feet square where they stayed 9 elevators and 3 stairways; this triangular core pillars helped the circular outer ring did not have a section especially large in higher plants.

Plant Distribution of Lake Point Tower was designed by John Heinrich and George Schipporeit, which you can see the triangular core of service with the three corridors of access to different apartments, the design interior of the Lake Point highly reminiscent to the recently inaugurated Burj Burj Khalifa (Burj Dubai) / Planta de Distribución de la Lake Point Tower diseño de John Heinrich y George Schipporeit, en la que se aprecia el núcleo central triangular de servicio con los tres pasillos de acceso a los diferentes apartamentos; el diseño interior de la Lake Point recuerda en gran medida al recientemente inagurado Burj Khalifa (Burj Dubai)

The curvature of this innovative facade is calculated to building users can not see the rest of the windows of neighboring apartments. The curtain wall facade is interrupted at the start of each plant through internal longitudinal drawers along the same which housed the various ducts of heating, air conditioning and ventilation systems of the building, this drawer ongoing hosting facilities, also makes the fear go away vertigo by building users. The Lake Point Tower has an attic that contains within it a rotating restaurant and not open to the public, with spectacular views of Lake Michigan.

The lower levels of the building have different shops and parking. Outside were conditioned also various leisure and recreation as a pool, playground, and a waterfall with ducks, all integrated into green areas and private. The different facades are composed of a set of anodized aluminum curtain wall with the characteristic black color. The design of this building has also inspired other architects like the firm Solomon, Cordwell, Buenz & Associates, who designed two skyscrapers to the city of Chicago as the Harbor Point or the Park Tower Condominiums, although his drawing in either plant very different ways, are quite similar and with similar characteristics.

The Lake Point Tower is part of a strong list of 150 buildings developed by the prestigious (AIA) American Institute of Architects, one of the most beloved and representative buildings of American architecture. It was the tallest residential building in the world between 1968 and 1993 until the building was opened Tregunter 3 in Hong Kong for about 200 meters high. The splendid building rises from the center of the city in the Peninsula of Navy Pier, one of the biggest attractions of the city of Chicago.
