El origen del HSB Turning Torso data de finales de los años 90, ya que el por entonces Director de la compañía sueca HSB Malmo Johnny Orback , quedó gratamente sorprendido al ver una escultura en mármol blanco llamada “Twisting Torso” en un catálogo que había presentado Santiago Calatrava en una exposición algunos años antes y que simulaba el movimiento de un torso humano en giro. A Orback, que tuvo una visión, se le ocurrió la genial idea de construir un edificio residencial a base de cubos que giraban; así que no lo dudó un segundo y viajó a Zurich para proponer al arquitecto el diseño de tan complicada magnitud.
El espectacular edificio, que cuenta con nueve cubos que se retuercen 90 grados desde su base hasta la planta más alta, se distribuye en torno a un núcleo central de hormigón armado que finalmente sobresale del volumen del mismo. Un uso mixto se le daría a este interesantísimo rascacielos desde el punto de vista estructural y arquitectónico, con espacios destinados a oficinas en los dos primeros cubos inferiores y apartamentos de lujo del tercer al noveno cubo, ambos inclusive. Lo más destacado de la fachada es la espina dorsal externa que recorre la fachada en toda su extensión verticalmente y que aporta estabilidad frente al fuerte viento; estas dos paredes estructurales, que combinan tanto vigas horizontales como inclinadas de acero, tienen como misión transmitir las cargas a la cimentación del edificio.
Los aparcamientos privados se diseñaron mediante un edificio anexo al propio HSB Turning Torso y al que se puede acceder a través de un túnel que los conecta; esta solución fue motivada por el nivel freático del edificio, ya que el solar donde se ubicó finalmente el HSB Turning Torso se encontraba muy cerca del mar. El HSB Turning Torso fue considerado como el mejor edificio residencial del mundo en 2005 por el MIPIM de Cannes, importante galardón que destaca las construcciones vanguardistas más impactantes de los últimos tiempos y los edificios de gran altura; esta impresionante obra que simboliza un torso humano en giro diseñada por nuestro arquitecto más internacional del momento, recibió también el prestigioso Premio FIB en Nápoles en 2006.

The origin of the HSB Turning Torso dates from the late '90s, as the then Director of the Swedish company HSB Malmo Johnny Orback was pleasantly surprised to see a white marble sculpture called "Twisting Torso" in a catalog that had submitted Santiago Calatrava in an exhibition some years ago and that simulated the motion of a human torso rotation. A Orback, who had a vision, he got the brilliant idea to build a residential building blocks based on spinning, so do not hesitate one second and went to Zurich to propose the design architect of an awkward size.
The spectacular building, with nine cubes that twist 90 degrees from its base to the top floor, is distributed around a central core of reinforced concrete that eventually protrudes from the same volume. A mixed use would be given to this most interesting skyscrapers from the standpoint of structural and architectural spaces for offices in the first two blocks and luxury apartments below the third to the ninth cube inclusive. The highlight of the facade is the backbone that runs outside the front to the fullest extent vertically and provides stability against strong wind, these two structural walls, combining both horizontal and inclined beams of steel, are tasked to transmit the loads the foundation of the building.
The private car parks were designed by a building annexed to own and HSB Turning Torso, which can be accessed through a tunnel that connects them, this solution was motivated by the groundwater level of the building as the site where they finally located the HSB Turning Torso was near the sea. The HSB Turning Torso was regarded as the best residential building in the world in 2005 by the MIPIM in Cannes, important award that highlights the most striking avant-garde buildings in recent times and high rise buildings, this impressive work that symbolizes a human torso designed by our architect drawing more current international, also received the prestigious IBF in Naples in 2006.
