La Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias de Valencia se erigió espléndida sobre el antiguo cauce del río Turia. Echando la mirada un poco hacia atrás, concretamente en el año 1957, se producía en Valencia una triste riada que ocasionaría la inundación de gran parte de la ciudad. Se desvió el río Turia años más tarde para impedir así otro posible peligro de inundación por lluvias muy fuertes. Mediante el desvío del río, la ciudad de Valencia ganaba así diez kilómetros de longitud para destinarlos exclusivamente a zonas verdes, parques, zonas de ocio y recreo. El enorme complejo de la Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias de Valencia se situó en la periferia, en una zona ligeramente llana y en el margen derecho del tramo final del antiguo cauce del río Turia.
La grandiosa obra comprende cinco construcciones emblemáticas hasta el momento más el puente de Monteolivete, el cual adaptó Calatrava ya que figuraba en el mapa incluso antes de construirse este enorme complejo cultural. De forma que el famoso arquitecto en vez de construir un nuevo puente, adaptó este e incluyó un acueducto bajo su paso inferior. De esta forma, la Ciudad de Las Artes y las Ciencias de Valencia quedará casi en su totalidad rodeada por agua. El Palacio de las Artes Reina Sofía, el Umbral, El Hemisferio, El Museo de las Ciencias Príncipe Felipe y el Museo Oceanográfico, son las construcciones arquitectónicas que conforman el conjunto hasta el momento. En estos momentos está en construcción el Ágora, una enorme plaza cubierta y el espectacular Puente de Serrería, que contará con el pilón arqueado más alto del mundo cuando finalice. Con la construcción de esta enorme obra emplazada en una zona de la periferia de Valencia, Calatrava ha demostrado que con el simple gesto simbólico que aportan, se pueden recuperar muchas zonas abandonadas de las ciudades, revalorizándose así los terrenos cercanos a ellas.

The City of Arts and Sciences in Valencia was erected on the splendid old Turia riverbed. Putting a little look back, specifically in 1957, in Valencia there was a sad flood that would cause the inundation of much of the city. Turia River was diverted years later, thereby preventing another potential danger of flooding due to heavy rains. By diverting the river, the city of Valencia won ten kilometers in length and intended exclusively for green spaces, parks, recreation and leisure areas. The huge complex of the City of Arts and Sciences in Valencia is situated on the outskirts, in a slightly flat and at the right margin of the final section of the old Turia riverbed.
The great work consists of five iconic buildings far more Monteolivete bridge, which Calatrava adapted as contained in the map even before construction this huge cultural complex. So the famous architect instead of building a new bridge, adapted this and included an aqueduct under the underpass. Thus, the City of Arts and Sciences in Valencia will be almost entirely surrounded by water. The Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia, Threshold, The Hemisphere, The Science Museum Príncipe Felipe and the Oceanographic Museum are the architectural constructions that make up the set so far. Currently under construction is the Agora, a huge square and the spectacular deck Sawmill Bridge, which will feature the arched pylon world's tallest when completed. With the construction of this huge work in an area located on the outskirts of Valencia, Calatrava has shown that with simple symbolic gesture to bring can recover many neglected parts of cities, and appreciating the land near them.
