Una fachada gaudiniana ante la Pedrera, así definía el propio arquitecto japonés Toyo Ito su diseño para la nueva fachada de un edificio de oficinas reconvertido en Apart-hotel de lujo que se encuentra localizado en el Paseo de Gracia muy cerca de la famosa Casa Milá o La Pedrera. Toyo Ito siempre ha manifestado haber tenido especial admiración por la obra del maestro Antoni Gaudí. De hecho, de joven estudió algunas de sus obras más importantes y representativas como la Casa Battló o el Parque Güell que le sirvieron para inspirarse en el diseño de la Mediateca de Sendai, una de sus obras más notables, así como para el diseño de la tienda Tods, en Tokio. El polémico proyecto del edificio Suites Avenue fue muy discutido en un principio por las autoridades locales de la ciudad condal debido a su proximidad con La Pedrera en el Paseo de Gracia.
No obstante, el Ayuntamiento de Barcelona se pronunció mas tarde de forma positiva con el proyecto, e incluso consideró que la obra se convertirá con el paso del tiempo en un nuevo icono arquitectónico para esta importante avenida de la ciudad de Barcelona en este siglo XXI. El encargo del proyecto a Ito consistía en la remodelación de la fachada y el revestimiento de las paredes interiores de un patio de luces correspondiente a un antiguo edificio de oficinas. Al arquitecto se le ocurrió la genial idea de diseñar una preciosa fachada de formas ondulantes simulando el movimiento de las olas marinas en homenaje al maestro Antoni Gaudí. "Yo venero a Gaudí y deseaba corresponder a las ondulaciones de La Pedrera, que desde luego no pretendo copiar. Quería reflejar la fluidez y dinamismo de las olas del mar".
La fachada está confeccionada mediante paneles de chapa de hierro de ocho milímetros de espesor cortados de forma irregular, con los que se consigue imitar el movimiento característico y ondulante de las olas del mar; a la vez ofrece una gran transparencia y luminosidad para los huéspedes que se encuentren en el interior de cada suite. La tonalidad nacarada de las piezas irregulares de la fachada hacen que cambie de color a lo largo de todo el día. La ligereza de la estructura que sostiene la fachada se pone aquí también de manifiesto como sello indiscutible de este prestigioso arquitecto en la mayor parte de sus obras. No obstante, para el patio de luces Toyo Ito hizo el empleo de un vidrio especial, cuya particularidad radica en que posee un ligero efecto óptico de oscilación. En el edificio se distribuyen 42 suites de lujo en las que se pueden encontrar apartamentos que oscilan entre los 70 m² y los 120 m².

The facade is made of panels with sheet iron to eight millimeters thick cut irregularly, with which it manages to mimic the undulating movement characteristic of the waves of the sea, at the same time offers high transparency and brightness for guests are located within each suite. The pearly tone of the pieces are irregular facade changes color throughout the day. The lightness of the structure that holds the facade is placed here also shown as a hallmark of this prestigious architect in the majority of his works. However, for the atrium of Toyo Ito made using a special glass, whose characteristic is that it has a slight illusion of oscillation. Distributed in the building 42 luxury suites which you can find apartments ranging from 70 m² to 120 m².
