Inspirada en la Torre de Televisión de Stuttgart, la Space Needle (Aguja Espacial), se construyó para la Feria Mundial de Seattle en el año 1962. El Presidente de la importante Feria Edward E. Carlson, encargaba a John Graham & Associates el diseño de una torre con un restaurante mirador para que fuese el centro de atención del importante evento. El tema de la Feria era el siglo XXI, de modo que el equipo de arquitectos con John Graham a la cabeza, diseñó una majestuosa torre de observación con la particularidad de que el núcleo superior de 42 metros de diámetro en su punto más ancho, iba a tener la forma nada menos que de un platillo volante. En este núcleo superior se alojaría el restaurante mirador que se llamó en un principio "The Eye of the Needle" (El Ojo de la Aguja); posteriormente se le cambiaría el nombre a "Skycity".
Este restaurante se encuentra a 160 metros de altura y gira 360 grados en exactamente 47 minutos para ofrecer una vista panorámica de toda la ciudad de Seattle. El diseño y la construcción de esta famosa torre duró sólo 400 días y puede resistir vientos de hasta 320 Km./h. La cimentación pesa nada menos que 5850 toneladas y se reforzó con 250 toneladas de acero. La torre se encuentra alejada del núcleo financiero de rascacielos en el centro de la ciudad. En la cúspide se instalaron 24 barras anti-relámpagos que conducen los posibles impactos eléctricos hacia el terreno. Son 832 los escalones que hay hasta la plataforma del Skycity. El diseño futurista de la torre que simula un platillo volador, hace de esta torre un icono arquitectónico indudable y una de las mayores atracciones de la ciudad de Seattle.

Inspired by the Stuttgart TV Tower, the Space Needle was built for the Seattle World's Fair in 1962. The Chairman of the important fair Edward E. Carlson, entrusted to John Graham & Associates to design a lookout tower with a restaurant to be the major focus of the event. The theme of the Fair was the twenty-first century, so that the team of architects John Graham to head, designed a magnificent observation tower with the addition that the upper core 42 meters in diameter at its widest point, was nothing to be in the form of less that a flying saucer. In this core upper house the restaurant veranda was called initially "The Eye of the Needle", then you change the name to Skycity.
This restaurant is located at 160 meters in height and rotates 360 degrees in just 47 minutes to provide an overview of the entire city of Seattle. The design and construction of this famous tower lasted only 400 days and can withstand winds of up to 320 km/h. The foundation weighs no less than 5850 tons and 250 tons of reinforced steel. The tower is removed from the financial center of skyscrapers in the downtown. In the top 24 bars were installed anti-lightning leading electrical potential impacts to the field. Are there are 832 steps to the platform of Skycity. The futuristic design of the tower which resembles a flying saucer, make this tower an architectural icon and no doubt one of the biggest attractions of the city of Seattle.
