Con el fin de trasladar a los 2500 empleados que la Compañia New York Times tenía repartidos en siete localidades distintas a una única sede en Nueva York, se sacó a concurso público el diseño de un nuevo edificio emblemático que ofreciese transparencia con la ciudad y que a la vez pudiese ser un edificio ecológico y sostenible; diferentes firmas prestigiosas relacionadas con el mundo de la arquitectura presentaron sus diseños modernos e innovadores. El arquitecto Renzo Piano, que ganó el concurso con su propuesta en colaboración con la firma de arquitectos Fox & Fowle, fue galardonado con el Premio Pritzker (Novel de la Arquitectura) en el año 1998 y es conocido en todo el mundo por el diseño del Centro Georges Pompidou de París o el Aeropuerto Internacional de Kansai en Osaka, Japón. El nuevo Edificio del New York Times se encuentra localizado en el 620 de la Octava Avenida al oeste del distrito de Midtown, Manhattan, Nueva York, y viene a revitalizar esta zona de la isla de Manhattan que estaba en decadencia con la ayuda de otros edificios importantes como la Hearst Tower diseñada por Foster + Partners, que está emplazada también en la Octava Avenida muy cerca de la esquina suroeste de Central Park.
A pesar de que el New York Times Building no cuenta con la certificación LEED que premia a los edificios autosuficentes y ecológicos, el importante edificio tiene la particularidad de poseer una fachada realmente innovadora. El edificio, de planta cruciforme, posee una estructura de acero que ha sido diseñada por el Ingeniero Estructural Thornton Tomasetti. La piel del edificio está formada por un sistema de muro cortina mediante un vidrio especial de baja emisividad que a la vez que ofrece iluminación natural en el interior, reduce el uso de la calefacción y la refrigeración, consiguiendo así un enorme ahorro energético. A las fachadas este, oeste y sur, se acopló una estructura metálica que contiene unos tubos cerámicos horizontales de 4.3 mm. de diámetro con los que se consigue bloquear la luz solar directa reduciendo así la temperatura interior del edificio. Debido a estos tubos situados estratégicamente en estas tres fachadas, esta va cambiando de color durante el día con las tonalidades del cielo reduciéndo el deslumbramiento. No obstante, 18000 lámparas fluorescentes regulables de forma individual suplen la luz natural y proporcionan un ahorro energético real del 30%. El New York Times Building con sus 319 metros de altura es actualmente el cuarto rascacielos más alto de Nueva York empatado con el famoso Edificio Chrysler.

In order to move the 2,500 employees that the New York Times Company was divided into seven different locations to a single headquarters in New York, was brought to public competition to design a new landmark that would provide transparency to the city and that both could be a green building and sustainable various prestigious firms related to the world of architecture presented their innovative and modern designs. The architect Renzo Piano, which won the competition with his proposal in collaboration with the architectural firm Fox & Fowle, he was awarded the Pritzker Prize (Novel of Architecture) in 1998 and is known worldwide for designing the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris and the Kansai International Airport in Osaka, Japan. The new New York Times Building is located at 620 Eighth Avenue west of Midtown, Manhattan, NY, and is to revitalize this area of the island of Manhattan that was in decline with the help of other buildings important as the Hearst Tower designed by Foster + Partners, which is also located on Eighth Avenue near the southwest corner of Central Park.
Although the New York Times Building does not have LEED certification that rewards autosuficentes and ecological buildings, the landmark building has the distinction of having a truly innovative façade. The building, cruciform, has a steel structure designed by structural engineer Thornton Tomasetti. The skin of the building consists of a curtain wall system with a special low emissivity glass that while providing natural light inside, reduces the use of heating and cooling, thus gaining a huge energy savings. In the fronts east, west and south, was coupled by a metallic structure that contains a horizontal ceramic tubes of 4.3 mm. in diameter which block gets direct sunlight thereby reducing the temperature inside the building. Because of these tubes are strategically located in these three fronts, this is changing color during the day with hues of sky reduce glare. However, fluorescent lamps 18 000 individually controlled supplement the natural light and provide real energy savings of 30%. The New York Times Building with its 319 meters high, is currently the fourth tallest skyscraper in New York tied with the famed Chrysler Building.
