Allá por el año 1996 se comenzó a barajar la posibilidad de crear un Fórum Universal de las Culturas por parte de las Autoridades Locales de Barcelona, aunque no sería hasta noviembre del año siguiente cuando se aprobó el proyecto por la Unesco y por unanimidad. El nombre oficial de este importante acontecimiento internacional celebrado en 2004 en Barcelona es "Fórum Universal de las Culturas 2004"; también se le conoce como "Fórum de Barcelona 2004". El ambicioso proyecto, cuya construcción arrancó en 2001, consistía también en recuperar un barrio desde hacía tiempo olvidado y donde se encontraba una gran estación depuradora. El enorme complejo del Fórum de las Culturas se ubicó muy cerca de la desembocadura del río Besós donde se construyó una enorme explanada (actualmente es la segunda mayor del mundo), ganándole terreno al mar. Esta gran explanada acogería diferentes construcciones que formarían parte del importante acontecimiento y en la que se construyeron dos edificios principales, el Edificio Fórum y un Centro de Congresos que quedaron unidos por un túnel que los conecta; a destacar también una enorme placa fotovoltáica que se instaló en el este de la gran explanada y que abastece con energías renovables a esta zona de la ciudad. El Edificio Fórum en la actualidad está siendo remodelado para albergar el Museo de Ciencias Naturales de Barcelona; no obstante, bajo el subsuelo de la enorme explanada del Fórum se conserva la antigua estación depuradora.

El Fórum de las Culturas 2004 se desarrolló sobre tres importantes ejes temáticos, el desarrollo sostenible y las condiciones para la paz y la diversidad cultural. Estos tres temas se desarrollaron en el edificio principal denominado "Edificio Fórum de Barcelona", que se construyó expresamente para celebrar este importante acontencimiento en 2004 y que fue diseñado por los prestigiosos arquitectos suizos Herzog & de Meuron. El recinto se ha convertido en muy poco tiempo en todo un icono arquitectónico para la ciudad de Barcelona gracias a su forma triangular de color azul ultramar. El vanguardista edificio está conformado por un triángulo equilátero de 25 metros de altura y 180 metros de lado que dan la bienvenida a la gran explanada. El Edificio Fórum está orientado de tal forma, que dos de sus fachadas son una prolongación de la Avenida Diagonal y la Rambla de Prim, respectivamente; la tercera se abre hacia la gran explanada de 16 Hectáreas en su lado sur. Los arquitectos quisieron ofrecer grandes espacios públicos para el ocio y el recreo de los ciudadanos, de acuerdo con la historia, el clima y la cultura de la ciudad.

El elemento principal de la explanada del Fórum es el Edificio Fórum. El interior está compuesto por espacios para Conferencias, Conciertos, unas pequeñas Oficinas, un Restaurante con salida hacia una terraza superior, un gran Auditorio que se convierte en el corazón del edificio con una capacidad para 3.200 asientos; también varias Salas de Exposición en la planta superior. Esta planta de terminación superior, que cuenta con una superficie de 8.000 m² destinados exclusivamente a Salas Expositivas, parece estar suspendida en el aire gracias a varios apoyos de hormigón armado situados estratégicamente por los arquitectos en diferentes puntos del edificio. Esta planta superior está envuelta por una fachada de color "azul ultramar" a la que se le ha aplicado un acabado de textura gruesa pulverizada como la que se emplea habitualmente en la construcción de túneles; posteriormente se le añadieron pigmentos de un color azul luminoso que cambian de color en función del ángulo desde donde vengan los rayos solares; las tonalidades varían desde el color azul, pasando por el violeta o los tonos negros. Además, la continuación de la parte inferior de la cubierta y que forma parte del propio techo del Auditorio, está confeccionada mediante placas de aluminio de color plateado que serigrafiadas, simulan el movimiento de las olas marinas. La fachada azul ultramar está seccionada mediante unos recortes limpios a modo de lucernarios y por ventanas de formas irregulares con las que se consigue una importante iluminación natural en su interior.

Con el fin de modernizar esta zona urbana de la ciudad de Barcelona mediante un nuevo Puerto Olímpico con motivo de la celebración de los famosos Juegos Olímpicos de Barcelona 1992, las Autoridades Locales de Barcelona encargaban al prestigioso arquitecto Frank O. Gehry una enorme escultura que se situó en el inicio del Paseo de la Villa Olímpica. Gehry se inspiraba en la figura simple de un pez para dar vida a esta gran escultura que se ha convertido en un auténtico icono indudable para la ciudad; la obra dialoga con el mar mediterráneo que se sitúa frente a él. No hay que olvidar que Frank Gehry no sólo concibe todas sus obras arquitectónicas como verdaderas esculturas en si mismas, sino que además, una vez concluidas estas, se convierten en verdaderas obras de arte. Esta majestuosa obra, denominada "Pez", es un fiel reflejo de ello. A Frank Gehry la inspiración por la figura de los peces le viene de su propia infancia, ya que solía jugar con varios peces de colores en la bañera de su casa cuando era sólo un niño.

La superestructura que sostiene la piel de titanio fue creada por Catia, un software innovador basado en la ingeniería aeroespacial que ha sido desarrollado por la importante compañía Gehry Technologies / The superstructure that holds the titanium skin was created by Cathy, an innovative software based on aerospace engineering has been developed by Gehry Technologies major company

Es muy importante señalar que la escultura "Pez" es pionera en el mundo, ya que fue el primer proyecto de la firma Gehry Partners LLP que se creó con un software informático innovador llamado Catia que fue creado por la Compañía Gehry Technologies y que está basado en la ingeniería aeroespacial. Mediante un exhaustivo proceso previo de cada obra por parte de todos los integrantes de esta prestigiosa firma de arquitectos, después de obtener un modelo a escala, hecho a mano y presentado al cliente, con este software innovador se procede más tarde a digitalizar cada vértice de la maqueta. Mediante este exhaustivo y minucioso proceso, se consigue crear un modelo tridimensional digital que servirá para elaborar todas la piezas reales que conformarán las miles de secciones que compondrán la estructura y la piel de cada edificio; el mejor ejemplo de este proceso es el propio Museo Guggenheim de Bilbao, su obra maestra y que sin duda reune todos estos pasos. La escultura Pez se sitúa orientada al mar justo delante del famoso Hotel Arts y muy cerca de la Torre Mafre de oficinas, sendos edificios que destacan en esta zona de la ciudad por su gran altura y diseño y que también estaban integrados en el mismo proyecto de regeneración urbana para la importante cita Olímpica.

La enorme piel de la escultura está soportada por una superestructura de acero interna que la sostiene. Mediante diferentes perfiles metálicos atornillados y soldados conformando un todo con una serie de rigizadores para darle mayor resistencia frente al fuerte viento, se le pudo dar forma a la estructura del enorme pez para recibir a la piel de titanio. La coraza del enorme pez, a modo de escamas, esta formada por tiras curvadas de titanio y que entrelazadas brillan durante todo el día según inciden los rayos del sol sobre ellas. El titanio, un material carísimo y empleado por este famoso arquitecto siempre que el presupuesto lo permita, consigue que sus obras brillen por sí mismas mediante diferentes tonalidades de múltiples colores bajo la luz del sol; esto hace del titanio un material muy especial para el revestimiento de edificios. Las dimensiones de esta enorme escultura icono cuentan con 54 metros de largo x 35 metros de ancho y desde luego no pasan desapercibidas para nadie que pasee por esta importante y transitada avenida de la ciudad de Barcelona.
