Con el fin de modernizar esta zona urbana de la ciudad de Barcelona mediante un nuevo Puerto Olímpico con motivo de la celebración de los famosos Juegos Olímpicos de Barcelona 1992, las Autoridades Locales de Barcelona encargaban al prestigioso arquitecto Frank O. Gehry una enorme escultura que se situó en el inicio del Paseo de la Villa Olímpica. Gehry se inspiraba en la figura simple de un pez para dar vida a esta gran escultura que se ha convertido en un auténtico icono indudable para la ciudad; la obra dialoga con el mar mediterráneo que se sitúa frente a él. No hay que olvidar que Frank Gehry no sólo concibe todas sus obras arquitectónicas como verdaderas esculturas en si mismas, sino que además, una vez concluidas estas, se convierten en verdaderas obras de arte. Esta majestuosa obra, denominada "Pez", es un fiel reflejo de ello. A Frank Gehry la inspiración por la figura de los peces le viene de su propia infancia, ya que solía jugar con varios peces de colores en la bañera de su casa cuando era sólo un niño.
La superestructura que sostiene la piel de titanio fue creada por Catia, un software innovador basado en la ingeniería aeroespacial que ha sido desarrollado por la importante compañía Gehry Technologies / The superstructure that holds the titanium skin was created by Cathy, an innovative software based on aerospace engineering has been developed by Gehry Technologies major company
Es muy importante señalar que la escultura "Pez" es pionera en el mundo, ya que fue el primer proyecto de la firma Gehry Partners LLP que se creó con un software informático innovador llamado Catia que fue creado por la Compañía Gehry Technologies y que está basado en la ingeniería aeroespacial. Mediante un exhaustivo proceso previo de cada obra por parte de todos los integrantes de esta prestigiosa firma de arquitectos, después de obtener un modelo a escala, hecho a mano y presentado al cliente, con este software innovador se procede más tarde a digitalizar cada vértice de la maqueta. Mediante este exhaustivo y minucioso proceso, se consigue crear un modelo tridimensional digital que servirá para elaborar todas la piezas reales que conformarán las miles de secciones que compondrán la estructura y la piel de cada edificio; el mejor ejemplo de este proceso es el propio Museo Guggenheim de Bilbao, su obra maestra y que sin duda reune todos estos pasos. La escultura Pez se sitúa orientada al mar justo delante del famoso Hotel Arts y muy cerca de la Torre Mafre de oficinas, sendos edificios que destacan en esta zona de la ciudad por su gran altura y diseño y que también estaban integrados en el mismo proyecto de regeneración urbana para la importante cita Olímpica.
La enorme piel de la escultura está soportada por una superestructura de acero interna que la sostiene. Mediante diferentes perfiles metálicos atornillados y soldados conformando un todo con una serie de rigizadores para darle mayor resistencia frente al fuerte viento, se le pudo dar forma a la estructura del enorme pez para recibir a la piel de titanio. La coraza del enorme pez, a modo de escamas, esta formada por tiras curvadas de titanio y que entrelazadas brillan durante todo el día según inciden los rayos del sol sobre ellas. El titanio, un material carísimo y empleado por este famoso arquitecto siempre que el presupuesto lo permita, consigue que sus obras brillen por sí mismas mediante diferentes tonalidades de múltiples colores bajo la luz del sol; esto hace del titanio un material muy especial para el revestimiento de edificios. Las dimensiones de esta enorme escultura icono cuentan con 54 metros de largo x 35 metros de ancho y desde luego no pasan desapercibidas para nadie que pasee por esta importante y transitada avenida de la ciudad de Barcelona.

De las ruinas de la antigua Grecia todavía se conservan construcciones emblemáticas en buen estado que han tenido que ir conviviendo con las sucesivas civilizaciones hasta nuestros días generación tras generación. El famoso Partenón de Atenas, que se construyó entre los años 447 al 432 a.C., se erigió en honor a Atenea, Diosa protectora de la ciudad de Atenas. El famoso templo se encuentra localizado en la Acrópolis de Atenas, y fue iniciado por Pericles (a.C. 495-429 a.C.), político orador ateniense durante la época de las Guerras Médicas y el Peloponeso. Asentado en lo alto de una enorme roca caliza horizontal, el famoso Partenón de Atenas fue diseñado por los arquitectos Ictino y Calícrates; no obstante, estos dos arquitectos de la época trabajarían conjuntamente con el importante escultor de la época Fidias (hacia 480 a.C.- h. 430 a.C), que se encargaría de la decoración escultórica de la monumental obra. El edificio se erigió espléndido en mármol blanco en lo alto de la acrópolis de Atenas, para dominar esta famosa ciudad histórica que hoy en día es visitada por millones de turistas cada año. De planta enteramente rectangular, sus medidas aproximadas son de unos 70 x 31 metros de largo y ancho respectivamente; la altura total es de unos 11 metros. La cubierta del templo está sustentada por una estructura a base de columnas de orden dórico que soporta todo el peso gracias a unos dinteles también de mármol. Los tímpanos estaban decorados con figuras en relieve relacionadas con diferentes escenas de la mitología griega; la mayor parte de estas esculturas, obra del escultor Fidias, descansan hoy en el prestigioso Museo Británico. El Partenón es todo un símbolo de la ciudad de Atenas, de Grecia entera y del mundo; no en vano, esta importantísima obra está considerada por la UNESCO como Patrimonio de la Humanidad.
El Monte pentélico se sitúa a 1109 metros de altura sobre el nivel del mar y es donde se asienta la Acrópolis de Atenas. Este monte está compuesto por enormes canteras de mármol pentélico. Este mármol, de blancura uniforme, brilla con tonalidades doradas bajo la luz del sol y fue utilizado para construir todas las construcciones que conforman la Acrópolis de Atenas y muchas otras esculturas de la antigüedad. En la actualidad, esta importante cantera de mármol pentélico está protegida por las autoridades locales y sólo puede ser utilizada para restaurar los propios edificios erigidos en torno a ella. En el lado norte de la Acrópolis de Atenas y en el mismo borde del precipicio se sitúa el Erecteión, uno de los más bellos templos griegos de orden jónico y de planta irregular con tres pórticos, que diseñó el arquitecto Filocles y que se construyó entre los años (hacia 421 a.C.- h. 406 a.C); cabría señalar que el templo se construyó sobre un terreno con diferentes desniveles. En el lado sur de este bellísimo templo se encuentra el pórtico que decoran las famosas Cariátides de Atenas. Su nombre quiere decir “habitantes de la ciudad de Caria”, en Laconia, que fue una antigua región del Peloponeso. Esta ciudad fue aliada de los persas en las Guerras Médicas, y sus habitantes fueron extraditados por otros griegos condenando a las mujeres de estos a soportar las más pesadas cargas convirtiéndolas en esclavas. De este modo surgiría la idea de sustituir la columna clásica por la figura femenina esculpida en mármol para soportar todo el peso del templo a modo de castigo. A pesar del lamentable sacrificio que ofrece la imagen de las famosas Cariátides de Atenas, estas se han convertido en una de las imágenes más representativas e importantes de la ciudad y también de Grecia.

La importante Exposición denominada, “Santiago Calatrava, Esculturas, Dibujos y Cerámicas ”, se presentaba al mundo el 23 de febrero de 2007 por parte de nuestro arquitecto español más internacional del momento y en el prestigioso Museo Es Baluard de Palma de Mallorca. La inédita Exposición, tuvo como invitados excepcionales en su inauguración a Sus Majestades los Reyes de España. Además, Calatrava donaría desinteresadamente una enorme escultura denominada “Bou”, que se situó exclusivamente en la terraza del propio Museo; esta será visible a partir de ahora desde la transitada avenida de Palma.
La escultura, de 40 toneladas de peso total, ha sido construida enteramente en bronce en el taller y simboliza el acto de estar sentado a ponerse de pie, fruto de los primeros pasos de los hijos del famoso arquitecto. La grandiosa obra, que sorprende por su inmensidad, característica incansable del arquitecto, ya que consigue engrandecer todas sus obras llevándolas a gran escala, posee una altura de nada menos que 15 metros. Unos tensores unidos a la espina dorsal ayudan a mantener estable la gigante escultura. Destacan por encima de todo los cinco cubos que simbolizan el torso humano y que parecen desafiar a la gravedad, por lo que se convertirán sin duda en un símbolo de Mallorca y de España entera.
La sorprendente escultura se compone básicamente de 5 cubos de 1,8 metros de lado cada uno que simulan en este caso el torso humano; estos cubos están sujetados por una estructura a modo de espina dorsal y dos apoyos inferiores conoidales. La escultura Bou demuestra el incansable quehacer del arquitecto por el estudio exhaustivo de la anatomía humana, que finalmente adapta y aplica a sus proyectos arquitectónicos más significativos.

The major exhibition called "Santiago Calatrava, Sculptures, Drawings and Ceramics ", presented to the world on 23 February 2007 by our most international Spanish architect time and in the prestigious Museum Es Baluard Palma de Mallorca.
