El diseño moderno e innovador de este interesante puente fue fruto de la colaboración creativa entre la arquitectura, el arte y la ingeniería a través del prestigioso arquitecto Norman Foster, el escultor Anthony Caro y los ingenieros estructurales Ove Arup & Partners quienes ganaron el concurso internacional de ideas. El material que se empleó en el diseño de este puente colgante es el aluminio y el acero; no obstante, destacan los dos enormes apoyos de hormigón armado a los que se anclan los dos soportes de acero en forma de “v” y que unidos entre sí con la ayuda de unos cables en suspensión, hacen la labor de sustentar las 2.000 toneladas de peso total para poder resistir el peso de 5.000 personas sobre el puente al mismo tiempo.
Unos perfiles de acero que atraviesan transversalmente la pasarela de un lado al otro y que se van repitiendo a lo largo del puente cada cuatro metros, contienen en el sentido longitudinal a modo de hiladas los cuatro enormes cables tensados con sección circular a cada lado. Después de inaugurado se descubrió que debido a la gran afluencia de personas que atravesaban el puente diariamente, se diese el conocido fenómeno del “movimiento lateral”; sorprendente caso que se produce por el paso peatonal sincronizado y que hace que se balancee la pasarela en gran medida. Después de diferentes pruebas exhaustivas por parte de los técnicos, se instalaron discretos amortiguadores bajo la cubierta que corrigieron el serio problema.
Para ganar la altura suficiente dando así covertura a los barcos de pequeña envergadura, frente al Tate Modern se diseñó una rampa en forma de v a través de la que se consigue llegar hasta el nivel superior de la pasarela. El Millenium Bridge fue el primer puente que se construyó en el río Támesis después de que se levantase el famoso Puente Torre en el año 1.894. Este vanguardista y moderno puente se encuentra localizado entre los puentes de Southwark y Blackfriars y salva el río Támesis a la altura de la Catedral de St. Paul uniendo la zona de Bankside con la City.

The modern and innovative design of this interesting bridge was the result of creative collaboration between architecture, art and engineering through the prestigious architect Norman Foster, the sculptor Anthony Caro and structural engineers Ove Arup & Partners who won the international competition of ideas. The material was used in the design of this bridge is aluminum and steel, however, highlight the two huge concrete supports that are anchored to the two steel supports in the form of "v" and linked to one itself with the aid of suspension wires, make the work of supporting the 2,000 tons of total weight to withstand the weight of 5,000 people on the bridge at the same time.
Steel profiles that traverse the bridge from one side to another and which are repeated across the bridge every four feet, contained in the longitudinal direction by way of the four huge cables strung taut with circular cross section on each side. Opened after it was discovered that due to the large influx of people crossing the bridge daily, give the well-known phenomenon of "lateral movement" amazing event that is produced by the crosswalk synchronized swing that causes the gateway to a large measure. After extensive testing by different technicians, discrete dampers were installed under the hood that corrected the problem seriously.
To gain sufficient altitude giving coverage to small-scale vessels, opposite the Tate Modern was designed as a ramp over which will be achieved to reach the top level of the catwalk. The Millennium Bridge was the first bridge built in the Thames after the adjournment of the famous Tower Bridge in the year 1894. This innovative and modern bridge is located between Southwark and Blackfriars bridges and save the River Thames at the height of the Cathedral of St. Paul joining the Bankside area with the City.
