In order to move the 2,500 employees that the New York Times Company was divided into seven different locations to a single headquarters in New York, was brought to public competition to design a new landmark that would provide transparency to the city and that both could be a green building and sustainable various prestigious firms related to the world of architecture presented their innovative and modern designs. The architect Renzo Piano, which won the competition with his proposal in collaboration with the architectural firm Fox & Fowle, he was awarded the Pritzker Prize (Novel of Architecture) in 1998 and is known worldwide for designing the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris and the Kansai International Airport in Osaka, Japan. The new New York Times Building is located at 620 Eighth Avenue west of Midtown, Manhattan, NY, and is to revitalize this area of the island of Manhattan that was in decline with the help of other buildings important as the Hearst Tower designed by Foster + Partners, which is also located on Eighth Avenue near the southwest corner of Central Park.

Although the New York Times Building does not have LEED certification that rewards autosuficentes and ecological buildings, the landmark building has the distinction of having a truly innovative façade. The building, cruciform, has a steel structure designed by structural engineer Thornton Tomasetti. The skin of the building consists of a curtain wall system with a special low emissivity glass that while providing natural light inside, reduces the use of heating and cooling, thus gaining a huge energy savings. In the fronts east, west and south, was coupled by a metallic structure that contains a horizontal ceramic tubes of 4.3 mm. in diameter which block gets direct sunlight thereby reducing the temperature inside the building. Because of these tubes are strategically located in these three fronts, this is changing color during the day with hues of sky reduce glare. However, fluorescent lamps 18 000 individually controlled supplement the natural light and provide real energy savings of 30%. The New York Times Building with its 319 meters high, is currently the fourth tallest skyscraper in New York tied with the famed Chrysler Building.

Montjuic Tower, Barcelona, Spain, 1989-1992

Montjuic Tower, Barcelona, Spain

ESPAÑOL

Cliente: Telefónica de España
Arquitecto-Ingeniero: Santiago Calatrava
Altura: 136 metros

The design of the telecommunications tower was triggered by a previous sculpture by the architect himself called "Genesis of Form", with this magnificent work is still showing a close study of sculpture by the architect, who later moved to its most important architectural projects. The architect gave the work of an amazing spectacle as the Montjuic Tower itself is an indisputable symbol of victory. At the bottom of the main entrance is accessed Telefónica offices through several steps along the central curve, moving door stood a white painted steel in the center symbolizing his studies of human eye and eyelid. The two legs of the tower is anchored to a metal platform with a steel rigizadores to give greater resistance to wind. Along with the Auditorio de Tenerife, the Alamillo Bridge in Seville and the City of Arts and Sciences of Valencia, the Communications Tower located in the Olympic Sports Complex Montjuic of Barcelona, is undoubtedly one of the best works that has left Santiago Calatrava in his home country, Spain.

Kingdom Centre, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, 1999–2002

ESPAÑOL

Cliente: Kingdom Holding Company
Arquitecto: Ellerbe Becket & Omrania
Ingeniero Estructural: Arup
Categoría: Skyscraper ( Super-Tall ) +300 metros
Altura: 302.33 metros – 991.90 pies
Uso: Mixto ( Residencial / Hotel / Oficinas )
Plantas: 41
Superficie: 185.000 m²

Seagram Building, New York City, USA, 1956-1958

ESPAÑOL

Cliente: Corporación Seagram
Arquitecto: Ludwig Mies van der Rohe
Ingeniero Estructural: Severud Associates
Categoría: Edificio Alto
Uso: Oficinas
Altura: 156.97 metros
Plantas: 38
Superficie: 59.457 m²

The Seagram Building was designed by renowned architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, and has become a true emblem for New York is one of the most beloved and representative buildings of this city. It is located at number 375, Park Avenue, and has been the headquarters of the Seagram Spirits Corporation from its inception until today. Seagram House, as is well known in New York City, was set back 30 meters from Park Avenue by the famous architect, who helped with this symbolic gesture to relieve the density of New York City by a large square public that it is just at his feet. After its construction in 1961, the location of this important building helped to be created a new law in New York City which required that all new buildings would have to leave open space around them. The building occupies only 40% of the lot where he built, and displayed to the city thanks to this great public plaza paved with granite that gives relief and turn enough prestige to the area. Two sheets of water with a rectangular shape and which are located at both ends on the side of Park Avenue, we welcome the building. He became the first office building in the world in which we used glass panels from floor to ceiling.

The rectangular, with its stunning design, it also became the first building to European modernist ideals matter to the United States by the Bauhaus school of design, art and architecture, together with a small number of important architects as Le Corbusier and Philip Johnson, formed the basis of the well known International Style. It has a base structure of steel beams and a façade with an innovative curtain wall, leaving large glazed areas in each of its plants due to metal support profiles located vertically along the entire facade. The drawing that offers outside the building has a distinctive, as it was designed by the architect in honor of the ancient classical columns, since the bases correspond to the entrance and the lobby, a stem, which resembles the body of the building office, and the capital, shown as the upper termination finish the facade. The Seagram Building was awarded an architectural landmark in 1989 and renovated in 2000. However, it appears as the only architectural work designed Ludwig Mies Van der Rohe (1886-1969) for the city of New York. Philip Johnson also helped design the Four Seasons Restaurant which is inside, and in two rooms, joined together, had a bar and a pool in the middle.
