Milwaukee Art Museum, Wisconsin, USA, 1994-2001

ESPAÑOL

Cliente: Milwaukee Art Museum
Arquitecto-Ingeniero: Santiago Calatrava
Distribución de la ampliación proyectada por Calatrava:
(Vestíbulo de acceso "Quadracci Pavilion", Salas de
exposición temporal, Auditorio, Parking, Cafetería, Tienda,
Puente peatonal bautizado como "Puente Reiman")
Superficie ampliación: 7.500 m²
Estilo: Posmoderno

The new pavilion has a large entrance hall called "Windhover Hall" and "is the postmodern interpretation of Calatrava for a Gothic cathedral with flying buttresses, pointed arches, ribbed vaults and a central hall topped by a dome of glass and steel"

Size Enlargement: 7,500 m²
Style: Postmodern

In 1994 the directors of the Milwaukee Art Museum is raised to create a "new entry majestic, an orientation point for visitors and a redefinition of the identity of the Museum through the creation of a powerful image." Until then there were two buildings that made up the Milwaukee Art Museum, one the main building was designed by Saarinen Eeron in 1957 in tribute to victims of war, yet another addition designed by the architect David Kahler in 1975 using a block-shaped module. Both buildings were placed between the Lincoln Memorial and the lake, but there was a drawback that could be accessed only through the Museum entrance to the main building designed by Saarinen, and expansion designed by David Kahler was very low in the story below, without any inter-connection to the city.

Mobile sunscreen also has sensors that automatically close the wings when the wind speed exceeds 23 km / h for more than three seconds, the opening and closing of the wings takes 3.5 minutes / La pantalla solar móvil cuenta además con unos sensores que cierran automáticamente las alas cuando la velocidad del viento supera los 23 km/h durante más de tres segundos; el abrir y cerrar de las alas tarda 3,5 minutos

The Directors of the Milwaukee Art Museum studied the proposals from no less than seventy-seven architects. Santiago Calatrava, who won the competition with its beautiful design inspired by the anthropomorphic figure of a bird, created a breathtaking entrance hall, 27 feet high steel and glass that covered by a brise-soleil mobile lifts his wings twice day to welcome visitors. The major expansion of Calatrava "responds to the culture of the lake: sailing ships, the weather, the sense of movement and change." The new spaces designed by Santiago Calatrava that would expand the museum, were focused on creating public spaces, a reception room, an auditorium, Cafe, shop and parking, in addition, of the 7,500 m² of which was to have the new extension, 1,500 m² architect allocated spaces for temporary exhibitions.

The main hall has at its end closest to the lake with a chapel, apart from simulating the prow of a ship, offering magnificent views of Lake Michigan through the large windows that were arranged from floor to ceiling. However, on both sides of the central pavilion is accessible spaces for temporary exhibitions that the architect designed specifically for the project. Originally only accessible through the Museum building designed by Saarinen, but with the expansion of the Calatrava Milwaukee Art Museum features three major new hits today. A new bridge across the Reiman by a walk from Wisconsin Avenue itself, also through a garage door facing the entrance and another with a vaulted underground parking located on the side nearest the main pavilion.

The new Quadracci Pavilion modern design and innovative designed by renowned Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava received the 2004 Outstanding Structure Award by the International Association for Bridge Structural Engineering / El nuevo Quadracci Pavilion de diseño moderno e innovador proyectado por el prestigioso arquitecto español Santiago Calatrava recibió en 2004 el Outstanding Structure Award por la International Association for Bridge Structural Engineering

The highlight of the project is moving sunscreen forms called "Burke Brise Soleil ", which is composed of two symmetrical wings features together that are distributed in thirty-six wings on either side of the main structure. These fins vary in size, ranging from 32 to 8 meters, the whole structure formed by the anthropomorphic figure of the bird weighs 90 tonnes. The main pavilion designed by Santiago Calatrava is joined to the busy Wisconsin Avenue through the bridge Reiman that the architect designed for the same project and that, apart from having a pile of counter-bracing in its central section with an inclination of 47 ° similar to own main hall has a 73 meter path length for a pedestrian access to the Museum.

The Eero Saarinen's dramatic design that had been transmitted to the main building dedicated to the victims of the war also inspired Calatrava to design the Quadracci Pavilion. Architect achieved this symbolic work of not only please the customer an amazing way to give the best possible architecture using their knowledge of architect-engineer, but also managed to give a true identity to this place by a work of plasticity and unparalleled beauty, primarily for its sculptural form, tireless feature the greatest architect of his works. In the words of Calatrava, "the crowning element of the brise-soleil, the shape of the building is both formal (complete composition), functional (controls the level of light), symbolic (opening offers to the visitors welcome), and iconic (it creates a memorable image for the Museum and the city). "Dan Kiley, a renowned landscape architect also designed public gardens of the compound.

Sundial Bridge, Redding, California, USA, 1996-2004

ESPAÑOL

Promotor: Fundación McConnell y otros
Arquitecto-Ingeniero: Santiago Calatrava
Ingenieros de construcción: Buckland & Taylor
Tipo de puente: Atirantado
Longitud: 213 metros
Ancho: 7 metros
Uso: Peatonal y bicicletas

The spectacular Sundial Bridge was the first bridge designed the renowned Spanish architect-engineer Santiago Calatrava for the United States of America. The beautiful footbridge is located in a place of true natural beauty of Northern California and especially in Redding, a town which is located on Park Turtle Bay on its way through the Sacramento River. This huge natural park contains a 300-acre campus and facilities of the Building Museum Turtle Bay at its core. The Museum hosts several interactive exhibits about the relationship between humans and the natural world also explains the different paths are there in this beautiful area that has also provided an amphitheater and a butterfly nursery. One of the particularities of this majestic white bridge is its perfect location in a north-south position is transforming the inclined steel pylon in the gnomon of a sundial authentic.

The commissioning of the project was Santiago Calatrava to design a bridge that would provide considerable ecological sensitivity, not only by the beautiful enclave would be placed, but also because they happened to this area of the Sacramento River coincided with the nesting place salmon. The architect proposed to design a bridge with an inclined pylon at its northern end to produce no shadow on the river so as not to disturb the salmon population and achieve a lower environmental impact as possible, also placed a pylon side of the board. Calatrava designed a really beautiful, modern bridge that is integrated prominently in the wonderful enclave was built, light and save a length of 213 meters to the function of connecting the Museum building with the 200-acre arboretum, also Since its construction, the Sundial Bridge is an integral part of the network of trails of this beautiful Californian ecological zone.

The walkway consists of a pylon cable-stayed 66 meters high which is situated at the northern end of the Sacramento River. Calatrava designed the angled steel pylon and extended gap down (to the level of the river), where an amphitheater conditioned trencadís coated curved and decorated with one of his sculptures to the visitors they had an area of recreation and leisure and to enjoy this magical place. Are 14 stay cables supporting the entire weight of the board to withstand a 1,600-ton light structure consisting of a steel truss. The board is made by slip translucent glass panels arranged on a steel frame. Along with the Alamillo Bridge in Seville, work is also the architect Santiago Calatrava, the Sundial Bridge is one of the few bridges in the world who have a pylon cable-stayed strapless stabilizing counterweight to withstand the weight of the board.

Bach de Roda Bridge, Barcelona, Spain, 1985-1987

Bach of Roda Bridge, Barcelona, Spain

ESPAÑOL

Cliente: Autoridades Locales
Arquitecto-Ingeniero: Santiago Calatrava
Tipo: Puente de arco atirantado
Estructura: Mixta (acero y hormigón)
Longitud: 128 metros
Uso: Mixto

Bach of Roda Bridge, Barcelona, Spain

Type: tied arch bridge
Structure: Mixed (steel and concrete)
Length: 128 meters
Use: Mixed

Bach de Roda Bridge, which combines engineering and design, was commissioned by the Local Authorities the Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava on the occasion of the famous Olympic Games in Barcelona 1992. The modern bridge is located in the area of La Sagrera, and has the peculiarity that the central section is arranged just above the railroad tracks at an angle passing under it to unite and two districts of the city around a new park that is integrated. The avant-garde work, which has a total length of 128 meters long, would win in 1988 Art Prize City of Barcelona. These four steps together with other elements of concrete inclined to better support the board, give access to lower level pedestrian park. On both sides of the bridge in the middle of the runway, two areas stood Calatrava curves somewhat wider than the rest of the footbridge as a rest area, this space makes it important that the bridge is not only a transit point but also a meeting place and recreation.
