Cliente: Maggie’s Centres
Arquitecto: Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners
Tipo: Asistencial
Superficie: 370 m²

Putting a little look back, it should be noted that the Centers Maggie's were driven by the vision he had Maggie Keswick Jencks, who realized how little information they had at one point in her life when she herself was treated by the sad cancer disease. The first Maggie's Centers to be built was at the Western General Hospital Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1996. However, there are other Maggie's Centers have also been designed by different architects with international standing, which are located mostly in the UK and fortunately, now also expanding to different countries around the world such as Spain or China.

The specific function of these new centers is to help free of charge to cancer patients throughout the year. The relaxation and stress reduction, emotional support and information for every patient, is the aid that are received daily in these new centers. They are treated here every year 6,000 new people. The new building covers the assistance of various districts of the city of London and serves more than 10,000 people annually.

Maggie's Centre, London, UK

The Maggie's Center is located attached to Charing Cross Hospital, in the borough of Hammersmith, west London. The building stood at the very apple of the hospital, particularly in the southwest corner of Fulham Palace Street. Access to the complex is located at the entrance to the hospital itself that leads directly to the street. A nice and short walk through a path that is integrated in the middle of a beautiful garden with trees and green areas, leads to the main entrance hall protected from rain by the elegant deck.

Maggie's Centre, London, UK

The building design has been treated in a special way by the architect, and away from designing a purely institutional building, tried to reflect the idea that home was a comfortable house, to make this much more comfortable for the patients themselves. It was to the new building contrasts sharply with the existing hospital, as it provided an indisputable presence in this area of Hammersmith in volume and height. In the outer perimeter were at different trees to make an acoustic barrier and that there was no noise from the nearby traffic, while happy to patients the view from the inside.

Maggie's Centre, London, UK

The kitchen / dining room has a double height, and is shown as one of the most important compound, being the soul and yet the heart of the iconic work, since it serves as a meeting point for all building users. The Maggie's Center is divided between two floors. On the ground floor are the different spaces of care to patients, the lobby, the upper staircase, kitchen, dining room, multiple lounges and reading areas, a massage room, and patio winter continues the dialogue with the house and outside. On the top floor, which also has several terraces, were distributed by different offices for the proper administration of this avant-garde and modern.

Maggie's Centre, London, UK

The main building structure is composed of several frames of concrete mixed and steel that contrasts greatly with the rest of the interior space. This arched structure which stands at the center of the building as a ring, modulates the spaces and you draw the different units around the kitchen also makes the task of supporting the full weight of the upper deck. This deck is lightened by different geometric shapes like a diamond that also exploit natural light inside.

The Maggie's Center in London designed by Richard Rogers team, was opened later after the prestigious Stirling Prize in 2009, a prize awarded annually to the Royal Institute of British Architects, which rewards buildings that have completed the largest contribution to Architecture British in Europe last year.

Pasarela Campo Volantín, Bilbao, Spain, 1994-1997

Campo Volantín footbridge, Bilbao, Spain, by jmhdezhdez

ESPAÑOL

Cliente: Campo Volantín S.L.
Arquitecto-Ingeniero: Santiago Calatrava
Tipo: Atirantado
Vano: 75 metros
Uso: Peatonal

The Promoter Campo Volantín S.L. was the catalyst that brought to contest the construction of a bridge over the river Nervión not far from the site where it is located today the prestigious Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, the work of another renowned architect, Frank O. Gehry . The main feature of the project was also agreement that the bridge would be high enough to let ships pass under his bottom. Santiago Calatrava, who won the project, designed a breathtaking runway thanks to the great parabolic arch of steel bent and split across the bridge from side to side.

The steel arch with a circular section of 50 cm. thickness reaches a final height of 15 meters. The gateway, with a total length of 75 meters rises to 8.5 meters high with respect to its high water to make way for vessels flying their underpass. Two ramps in two tranches of 2 meters wide each with a slope of 7%, saving the high slope that provides the bridge to cross from one side to another. Tensioned wires of 30 mm. in diameter, are anchored to the arch of an immaculate white for the support of the striking gateway. The architect gave to this footbridge and innovative modern design by using a material with beautiful colors, translucent glass, and together with the artificial lighting by means of staying under the dashboard lights, produce every night a unique visual spectacle and truly spectacular.

Bou, Museo Es Baluard, Mallorca, Islas Baleares, Spain, by jmhdezhdez

Promotor: Canadian National Railway
Arquitecto: John Andrews International & WZMH Architects
Ingeniero Estructural: NCK Engineering
Altura: 553 metros
Tipo de Torre: Telecomunicaciones
Uso: Mixto

Image CN Tower, Toronto, Canada, by © Ste&We

The CN Tower (Canadian National Tower), is located on the north shore of Lake Ontario and the downtown Toronto. Canadian National Railway Company commissioned the design of a telecommunications tower high enough to solve the communications problems that had led to the construction of many skyscrapers in the city since the days of the 60s. The tower has two large observational platforms. The Skypod has three levels, to 342 meters high observation platform located outdoors and inside with a glass floor, at 346 meters there is another inner platform; to 351 meters the belvedere restaurant makes a full 360 degree rotation every 72 minutes. The other great platform is located at 447 meters and is called Beck space.

The famous tower has six elevators that ascend at a speed of 22 km / h, so it takes about a minute to climb the platform of the Skypod. The huge pillar that rises to the two major platforms consists of 40,522 m³ of reinforced concrete with 5080 tons of steel that support a tolerance to the strong winds of up to 420 km / h, all of this means that the approximate weight of the tower is estimated at no less than 132,080 tons. With a budget of $ CDN 63 million, is the tallest tower belonging to the World Federation of Great Towers. Since the two main observation decks can see a panoramic view of the entire city. Thanks to this huge telecommunications tower, the city of Toronto offers one of the world's most beautiful skyline.
